For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Chrysler Pacifica are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mercedes Metris Passenger doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.
The Pacifica Touring non-Hybrid/Limited offers optional Forward Collision Warning Plus, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Metris Passenger offers an available collision warning system without the automated brake feature that would prevent or reduce the collision if the driver fails to react.
Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Pacifica has standard Rear Park Assist with Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.
The Pacifica Touring non-Hybrid/Limited offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Metris Passenger only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.
To help make backing safer, the Pacifica’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
The Pacifica offers optional Uconnect 9-1-1, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a GPS response system, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.
Both the Pacifica and the Metris Passenger have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available lane departure warning systems.
For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Pacifica the rating of “Top Pick” for 2018, a rating granted to only 100 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Metris Passenger has not been tested, yet.
Chrysler’s powertrain warranty covers the Pacifica 2 years and 24,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the Metris Passenger. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Metris Passenger ends after only 3 years or 36,000 miles.
There are over 6 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Pacifica’s warranty.
The Pacifica Hybrid’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 52 more horsepower (260 vs. 208) than the Metris Passenger’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The Pacifica’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 79 more horsepower (287 vs. 208) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. 258) than the Metris Passenger’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.
On the EPA test cycle the Pacifica Hybrid on full charge gets better fuel mileage than the Metris Passenger (87 city/76 hwy MPGe vs. 19 city/23 hwy).

The Pacifica Hybrid can drive on battery power alone for up to 32 miles. The Metris Passenger must run its internal combustion engine to move.
To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chrysler Pacifica uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Metris Passenger requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.
The Pacifica has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.
A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Chrysler Pacifica, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the Metris Passenger.
The Pacifica Hybrid has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a CVT.
For better stopping power the Pacifica’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Metris Passenger:
For better traction, the Pacifica has larger standard tires than the Metris Passenger (235/65R17 vs. 225/55R17). The Pacifica Limited’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Metris Passenger (245/50R20 vs. 225/55R17).
The Pacifica Limited’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Metris Passenger’s 55 series tires.
For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Pacifica Limited offers optional 20-inch wheels. The Metris Passenger’s largest wheels are only 17-inches.
The Chrysler Pacifica may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 500 pounds less than the Mercedes Metris Passenger.
The front grille of the Pacifica uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer active grille shutters.
The Pacifica uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.
The Pacifica has .5 inches more front headroom, 5.3 inches more front legroom, .1 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 3.2 inches more rear legroom and .7 inches more third row legroom than the Metris Passenger.
For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Pacifica’s middle and third row seats recline. The Metris Passenger’s middle and third row seats don’t recline.
The Pacifica’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer folding rear seats.
To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Pacifica Touring/Limited has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a power liftgate.
The Pacifica offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
To help each driver find a more comfortable driving position, the Pacifica has a telescoping steering wheel. Much better than just a tilt steering wheel or adjustable seat, this allows a short driver to sit further from the steering wheel while maintaining contact with the pedals. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a telescoping steering wheel.
When two different drivers share the Pacifica Limited, the memory system makes it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, outside mirror angle and radio stations. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a memory system.
The Pacifica Limited non-Hybrid’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer an easy entry system.
The Pacifica’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Metris Passenger does not have an oil pressure gauge.
The Pacifica’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them. Mercedes does not offer a locking feature on the Metris Passenger’s standard power windows.
Keyless-Enter-N-Go standard on the Pacifica LX allows you to unlock the driver’s door and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. (Pacifica Touring/Limited’s Keyless-Enter-N-Go will also allow unlocking the passenger doors and cargo door without taking your keys out). The Mercedes Metris Passenger doesn’t offer an advanced key system.
To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Pacifica has a standard rear wiper. A rear wiper costs extra on the Metris Passenger.
While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Pacifica Touring non-Hybrid/Limited detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.
The Pacifica has standard power remote mirrors. The Metris Passenger only comes with remote mirrors at extra cost. Without them the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.
The Pacifica’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mercedes charges extra for heated mirrors on the Metris Passenger.
When the Pacifica Limited is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Metris Passenger’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.
The Pacifica Touring/Limited’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer the luxury of automatic dimming mirrors.
Both the Pacifica and the Metris Passenger offer available heated front seats. The Pacifica Touring-L Plus/Limited non-Hybrid also has standard heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated second row seats aren’t available in the Metris Passenger.
Standard air-conditioned seats in the Pacifica Limited keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
On extremely cold winter days, the Pacifica’s optional (except L/LX) heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.
The Pacifica has a standard center folding armrest for the middle row passengers. A center armrest helps make middle row passengers more comfortable. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a middle row seat center armrest.
The Pacifica has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Metris Passenger.
To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Pacifica Touring non-Hybrid/Limited offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
Standard smartphone integration for the Pacifica allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, searching the internet and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.
To direct the driver from any location to a given street address, a GPS navigation system is available on the Pacifica (except L/LX). The Pacifica’s navigation system also has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a navigation system.
The Pacifica (except L/LX/Touring Plus/Touring L) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Metris Passenger doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
J.D. Power and Associates rated the Pacifica first among minivans in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Metris Passenger isn’t in the top three.
The Pacifica was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Five/10Best Trucks” for 3 of the last 3 years. The Metris Passenger has never been a Car and Driver “Top Five/10Best Truck” pick.
The Chrysler Pacifica outsold the Mercedes Metris by over 14 to one during 2018.
