Safety

The Corvette has standard OnStar®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The 720S doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Corvette and the 720S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Warranty

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty covers the Corvette 2 years longer than McLaren covers the 720S. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 720S ends after only 3 years.

There are over 157 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are McLaren dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Corvette’s warranty.

Reliability

The 720S’ redline is at 8500 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The Corvette has a 6500 to 6600 RPM redline.

Engine

The Corvette Z06’s standard 6.2 supercharged V8 produces 82 lbs.-ft. more torque (650 vs. 568) than the 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8. The Corvette ZR1’s standard 6.2 supercharged V8 produces 45 more horsepower (755 vs. 710) and 147 lbs.-ft. more torque (715 vs. 568) than the 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Corvette (except ZR1)’s fuel efficiency. The 720S doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Corvette uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The 720S requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is available on the Chevrolet Corvette, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 720S.

For better traction, the Corvette Z06/Grand Sport/ZR1’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 720S (F:285/30R19 & R:335/25R20 vs. F:245/35R19 & R:305/30R20).

The Corvette Z06/Grand Sport/ZR1’s 285/30R19 front and 335/25R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series front and 25 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 720S’ 35 series front and 30 series rear tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Corvette can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The 720S doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Corvette’s wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the 720S (106.7 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

The Corvette’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the 720S’ (41.6% to 58.4%). This gives the Corvette more stable handling and braking.

The Corvette Grand Sport Coupe handles at 1.18 G’s, while the 720S Coupe pulls only 1.08 G’s of cornering force in a Road and Track skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Corvette’s turning circle is 2.3 feet tighter than the 720S’ (37.7 feet vs. 40 feet).

The Corvette has 4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 720S (52 vs. 48).

Cargo Capacity

The Corvette Coupe has a much larger trunk than the 720S Coupe (15 vs. 12.7 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Corvette Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 720S doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Corvette’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 720S does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Corvette offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The 720S doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Corvette’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The 720S’ cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Corvette has standard extendable sun visors. The 720S doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Corvette’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The 720S’ visors are fixed into the windshield header.

The Corvette offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The 720S has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Corvette keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The 720S doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

To help keep the driver’s hands on the wheel, the Corvette has standard steering wheel controls for the radio. The 720S doesn’t offer steering wheel audio controls.

With standard voice command, the Corvette offers the driver hands free control of the radio and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The 720S doesn’t offer a voice control system.

Recommendations

The Corvette was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 15 of the last 22 years. The 720S has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.
