The XT5’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The QX30 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.
For enhanced safety, the front shoulder belts of the Cadillac XT5 are height-adjustable, and the rear seat shoulder belts have child comfort guides to move the belt to properly fit children. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages children to buckle up. The Infiniti QX30 has only front height-adjustable seat belts.
In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XT5 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The QX30 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.
Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XT5 offers optional Reverse Automatic Braking which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The QX30 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.
To help make backing safer, the XT5’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The QX30 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
The XT5 has standard OnStar®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The QX30 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.
Both the XT5 and the QX30 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.
The Cadillac XT5 weighs 510 to 1076 pounds more than the Infiniti QX30. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.
For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the XT5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 149 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The QX30 has not been tested, yet.
Cadillac pays for the first scheduled maintenance on the XT5. Cadillac will pay for an oil change, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Infiniti doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the QX30.
There are over 4 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Infiniti dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XT5’s warranty.
To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the XT5 has a standard 155-amp alternator (170-amp - XT5 optional). The QX30’s 110-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are better in initial quality than Infiniti vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Cadillac 12th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Infiniti is ranked 14th.
The XT5’s 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 102 more horsepower (310 vs. 208) and 13 lbs.-ft. more torque (271 vs. 258) than the QX30’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.
An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the XT5’s fuel efficiency. The QX30 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.
To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Cadillac XT5 uses regular unleaded gasoline. The QX30 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.
The XT5 FWD’s standard fuel tank has 6.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX30 FWD’s standard fuel tank (19.4 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The XT5 AWD’s standard fuel tank has 6.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX30 AWD’s standard fuel tank (21.7 vs. 14.8 gallons).
The XT5 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The QX30 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.
In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Cadillac XT5 higher (5 out of 10) than the Infiniti QX30 (3). This means the XT5 produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the QX30 every 15,000 miles.
An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Cadillac XT5, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the QX30.
For better stopping power the XT5’s brake rotors are larger than those on the QX30:
The XT5’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the QX30 are solid, not vented.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XT5 offers optional 20-inch wheels. The QX30’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.
The Cadillac XT5’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Infiniti QX30 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.
The XT5 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The QX30’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.
For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XT5’s wheelbase is 6.2 inches longer than on the QX30 (112.5 inches vs. 106.3 inches).
For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XT5 is 2.6 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the QX30.
The XT5 4x4 handles at .84 G’s, while the QX30 Premium AWD pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.
As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the XT5 4x4 is quieter than the QX30 Premium AWD (68 vs. 69 dB).
The XT5 has 3.9 inches more front hip room, 3.5 inches more front shoulder room, 6 inches more rear legroom, 5.7 inches more rear hip room and 3.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the QX30.
For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the XT5’s rear seats recline. The QX30’s rear seats don’t recline.
The XT5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat up than the QX30 with its rear seat up (30 vs. 19.2 cubic feet). The XT5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat folded than the QX30 with its rear seat folded (63 vs. 34 cubic feet).
Pressing a switch automatically lowers the XT5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The QX30 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.
To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the XT5 has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or on the XT5 Platinum, by just kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The QX30 doesn’t offer a power liftgate.
The XT5 has a 1000 lbs. towing capacity. The QX30 has no towing capacity.
The XT5 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The QX30 uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.
The XT5 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The QX30 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
The XT5’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The QX30 does not have an oil pressure gauge.
The XT5 Platinum has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The QX30 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.
The power windows standard on both the XT5 and the QX30 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the XT5 is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The QX30 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.
The XT5’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The QX30’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.
To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XT5 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the QX30 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XT5 has standard extendable sun visors. The QX30 doesn’t offer extendable visors.
Both the XT5 and the QX30 offer available heated front seats. The XT5 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the QX30.
Standard air-conditioned seats in the XT5 Premium/Platinum keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The QX30 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
On extremely cold winter days, the XT5’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The QX30 doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.
According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the XT5 is less expensive to operate than the QX30 because typical repairs cost much less on the XT5 than the QX30, including $220 less for a water pump, $27 less for a starter, $97 less for a fuel pump, $130 less for front struts and $631 less for a power steering pump.
The Cadillac XT5 outsold the Infiniti QX30 by almost five to one during 2017.
