Safety

For enhanced safety, the Cadillac ATS Coupe’s rear seat shoulder belts have child comfort guides to move the belt to properly fit children. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages children to buckle up. The Audi S5 doesn’t offer height adjustable seat belts.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The ATS Coupe V6 offers optional Rear Automatic Braking which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S5 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the ATS Coupe and the S5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the ATS Coupe 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Audi covers the S5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the S5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 3 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the ATS Coupe’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Cadillac 12th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the ATS Coupe V6’s fuel efficiency. The S5 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Cadillac ATS Coupe uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). The S5 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the ATS Coupe has larger rear tires than the S5 (255/35R18 vs. 245/40R18).

The ATS Coupe’s 255/35R18 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S5’s standard 40 series tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the ATS Coupe can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The S5 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The ATS Coupe’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the S5’s (56.7% to 43.3%). This gives the ATS Coupe more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the ATS Coupe FE3’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the S5’s (36 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

Chassis

The Cadillac ATS Coupe may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 500 pounds less than the Audi S5.

The ATS Coupe uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S5 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The ATS Coupe has 1 inch more front legroom, .8 inches more rear legroom and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the S5 Coupe.

Towing

The ATS Coupe V6 offers up to a 1000 lbs. towing capacity. The S5 has no towing capacity.

Ergonomics

The ATS Coupe has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The S5 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The ATS Coupe’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S5 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the ATS Coupe offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The S5 doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The ATS Coupe offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The S5 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The ATS Coupe is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S5 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the ATS Coupe owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the ATS Coupe will cost $1235 to $6180 less than the S5 over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Cadillac ATS Coupe will be $11730 to $18110 less than for the Audi S5.

Recommendations

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the ATS as the 2013 North American Car of the Year. The S5 has never been chosen.
