Safety

The X6 M’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Range Rover doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The X6 M has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Range Rover doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the X6 M helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Range Rover doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the X6 M and the Range Rover have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The X6 M’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Range Rover’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X6 M for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Range Rover.

There are almost 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X6 M’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the X6 M has a standard 210-amp alternator. The Range Rover’s 150-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 11th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 73 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 31st, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 77 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 30th.

Engine

The X6 M’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 227 more horsepower (567 vs. 340) and 221 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 332) than the Range Rover’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6. The X6 M’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 187 more horsepower (567 vs. 380) and 221 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 332) than the Range Rover HSE’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6. The X6 M’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 169 more horsepower (567 vs. 398) and 258 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 295) than the Range Rover P400e’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. hybrid. The X6 M’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 10 more horsepower (567 vs. 557) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 516) than the Range Rover SVAutobiography/SV Coupe’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8.

Environmental Friendliness

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the BMW X6 M as an “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV). The Land Rover Range Rover is only certified to “Low Emissions Vehicle” (LEV) standards.

Transmission

The X6 M’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Range Rover doesn’t offer launch control.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the X6 M has larger tires than the Range Rover (F:285/35R21 & R:325/30R21 vs. 235/65R19). The X6 M’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Range Rover (F:285/35R21 & R:325/30R21 vs. 275/45R21).

The X6 M’s 285/35R21 front and 325/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Range Rover’s standard 65 series tires. The X6 M’s tires are lower profile than the Range Rover’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the X6 M has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Range Rover.

Suspension and Handling

The X6 M offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Land Rover doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Range Rover.

The X6 M handles at 1.01 G’s, while the Range Rover Supercharged pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The X6 M executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.4 seconds quicker than the Range Rover HSE (24.3 seconds @ .84 average G’s vs. 27.7 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

Chassis

The X6 M is 3.1 inches shorter than the Range Rover, making the X6 M easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The X6 M’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The Range Rover’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that BMW service is better than Land Rover. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 45% lower rating, Land Rover is ranked 23rd.

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the X6 M the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Range Rover can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the X6 M to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Range Rover doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the X6 M has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Range Rover doesn’t offer cornering lights. The X6 M also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the X6 M has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover doesn’t offer extendable visors.
