Safety

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the X2’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

To help make backing safer, the X2’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the X2 and the GLC Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and blind spot warning systems.

Warranty

The X2’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the GLC Coupe’s (12 vs. 5 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X2 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GLC Coupe.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the X2’s reliability 16 points higher than the GLC Coupe.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mercedes is ranked 15th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 9 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

Engine

The X2 M35i’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 61 more horsepower (302 vs. 241) and 49 lbs.-ft. more torque (322 vs. 273) than the GLC 300 Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Environmental Friendliness

Tires and Wheels

The X2’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GLC Coupe’s standard 55 series tires.

The X2 offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the GLC Coupe; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The X2 sDrive28i xDrive handles at .92 G’s, while the GLC 300 Coupe pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The X2 sDrive28i xDrive executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the GLC 300 Coupe (25.9 seconds @ .68 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .63 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the X2’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the GLC 300 Coupe’s (37.2 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

Chassis

The BMW X2 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 550 pounds less than the Mercedes GLC Coupe.

The X2 is 1 foot, 2.1 inches shorter than the GLC Coupe, making the X2 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The X2 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GLC Coupe with its rear seat up (21.6 vs. 17.6 cubic feet). The X2 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GLC Coupe with its rear seat folded (50.1 vs. 49.4 cubic feet).

Model Availability

The X2 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
