Safety

The X1’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The X1 has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the X1 and the Stelvio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the X1 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 139 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Stelvio has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The X1’s corrosion warranty is 8 years longer than the Stelvio’s (12 vs. 4 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X1 for 2 years and 26000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo pays for maintenance for the Stelvio (3/36,000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are almost 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X1’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the X1 first among small premium SUVs in their 2018 Initial Quality Study. The Stelvio isn’t in the top three in its category.

Regenerative brakes improve the X1’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW X1 higher (7 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (3). This means the X1 produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Stelvio every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The X1’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Stelvio doesn’t offer launch control.

Tires and Wheels

The X1’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Stelvio’s standard 60 series tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the X1 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Stelvio doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The X1 xDrive28i handles at .87 G’s, while the Stelvio AWD pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the X1’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the Stelvio’s (37.4 feet vs. 38.5 feet).

Chassis

The BMW X1 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 450 pounds less than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The X1 is 9.2 inches shorter than the Stelvio, making the X1 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the X1 xDrive28i is quieter than the Stelvio AWD (40 vs. 43 dB).

Passenger Space

The X1 has 1.7 inches more front headroom, 3.8 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more rear headroom and 5.1 inches more rear legroom than the Stelvio.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the X1’s available rear seats recline. The Stelvio’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The X1 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Stelvio with its rear seat up (27.1 vs. 18.5 cubic feet). The X1 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Stelvio with its rear seat folded (58.7 vs. 56.5 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the X1. The Stelvio doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

The X1 offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the X1 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Stelvio can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

When the X1 is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Stelvio’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The X1’s optional Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Stelvio doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the X1 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the X1 will cost $1305 to $2045 less than the Stelvio over a five-year period.

The X1 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the X1 will retain 48.72% to 48.91% of its original price after five years, while the Stelvio only retains 48.22% to 48.46%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the BMW X1 will be $9465 to $11385 less than for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the X1 first among small premium SUVs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Stelvio isn’t in the top three.

The X1 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Five/10Best Trucks” for 2 of the last 3 years. The Stelvio has never been a Car and Driver “Top Five/10Best Truck” pick.

The BMW X1 outsold the Alfa Romeo Stelvio by almost three to one during the 2018 model year.
