For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Bentley Bentayga are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X5 M doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Bentayga and X5 M have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Bentayga has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X5 M’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To help make backing safer, the Bentayga’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The X5 M doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Bentayga and the X5 M have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, night vision systems, lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.

The Bentayga offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The X5 M doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Bentayga offers optional 22-inch wheels. The X5 M’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Bentayga has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X5 M, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The Bentayga offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The X5 M doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Bentayga uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the X5 M, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Bentayga’s wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer than on the X5 M (117.9 inches vs. 115.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Bentayga is .9 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than on the X5 M.

For better maneuverability, the Bentayga’s turning circle is 1.4 feet tighter than the X5 M’s (40.6 feet vs. 42 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Bentayga has a 1.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X5 M (9.7 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Bentayga to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The design of the Bentley Bentayga amounts to more than styling. The Bentayga has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .34 Cd. That is significantly lower than the X5 M (.38). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Bentayga get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Bentayga is quieter than the X5 M 4dr Sport Utility:

The Bentayga has 1.5 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front legroom and 4.3 inches more rear legroom than the X5 M.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Bentayga’s middle row seats recline. The X5 M’s rear seats don’t recline.

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Bentayga when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the liftgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The X5 M doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Bentayga’s second row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The X5 M doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Bentayga’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X5 M’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Bentayga’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The X5 M doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Bentayga offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X5 M doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Bentayga offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The X5 M doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Bentayga has standard extendable sun visors. The X5 M doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Bentayga’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The X5 M doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Bentayga offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The X5 M doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
