Safety

The S4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The XF doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Audi S4 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar XF doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The S4 has standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The XF doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the S4. But it costs extra on the XF.

Both the S4 and the XF have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The S4’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the XF’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 81 percent more Audi dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the S4’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 25th in initial quality. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 30th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 20th.

Engine

The S4’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 102 more horsepower (349 vs. 247) and 100 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 269) than the XF 25t’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The S4’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 53 more horsepower (349 vs. 296) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 295) than the XF 30t’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The S4’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 332) than the XF S’ standard 3.0 supercharged V6.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the S4 gets better fuel mileage than the XF S Sedan AWD V6 (21 city/30 hwy vs. 20 city/28 hwy).

Transmission

The S4’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XF doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the S4’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XF:

S4

XF

Front Rotors

13.8 inches

12.8 inches

Rear Rotors

13 inches

12.8 inches

Tires and Wheels

The S4’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XF’s standard 45 series tires.

Chassis

The S4 is 8.2 inches shorter than the XF Sedan, making the S4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks Audi third in service department satisfaction. With a 30% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 15th.

Ergonomics

The S4 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The XF doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the S4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the XF.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the S4 has standard extendable sun visors. The XF doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Recommendations

The Audi A4/S4 outsold the Jaguar XF by over twelve to one during the 2018 model year.
