Safety

The Q5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Range Rover doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Q5 has standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Range Rover doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Q5 and the Range Rover have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Q5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 139 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Range Rover has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The Q5’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Range Rover’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 75 percent more Audi dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Q5’s warranty.

Reliability

The Audi Q5’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Range Rover’s 3.0 supercharged V6, 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. hybrid and 5.0 supercharged V8 engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Q5’s reliability 62 points higher than the Range Rover.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 25th in initial quality. With 55 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 31st.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 63 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 30th.

Engine

As tested in Motor Trend the Audi Q5 is faster than the Land Rover Range Rover S.C. V6:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Q5 Auto gets better fuel mileage than the Range Rover with its standard engine (22 city/27 hwy vs. 17 city/23 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Audi Q5 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The Range Rover requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the Audi Q5 as an “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV). The Land Rover Range Rover is only certified to “Low Emissions Vehicle” (LEV) standards.

Transmission

The Q5 offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Range Rover doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Q5’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Range Rover doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

The Q5 stops much shorter than the Range Rover:

Tires and Wheels

The Q5’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Range Rover’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Q5 Premium Plus handles at .81 G’s, while the Range Rover Supercharged pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Q5 Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Range Rover HSE (27.2 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 27.7 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Q5’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Range Rover’s (38.4 feet vs. 40.5 feet). The Q5’s turning circle is 4.5 feet tighter than the Range Rover LWB’s (38.4 feet vs. 42.9 feet).

Chassis

The Audi Q5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 900 to 1700 pounds less than the Land Rover Range Rover.

The Q5 is 1 foot, 1.3 inches shorter than the Range Rover, making the Q5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Q5 is 7.1 inches narrower than the Range Rover, making the Q5 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The design of the Audi Q5 amounts to more than styling. The Q5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the Range Rover (.34 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q5 get better fuel mileage.

Cargo Capacity

The Q5’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The Range Rover’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Land Rover. J.D. Power ranks Audi third in service department satisfaction. With a 59% lower rating, Land Rover is ranked 23rd.

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the Q5 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Range Rover can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Range Rover doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Q5 has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Q5 owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Q5 with a number “5” insurance rate while the Range Rover is rated higher at a number “7” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Q5 is less expensive to operate than the Range Rover because typical repairs cost much less on the Q5 than the Range Rover, including $183 less for fuel injection, $39 less for a fuel pump, $60 less for front struts and $420 less for a timing belt/chain.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Audi Q5, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Land Rover Range Rover isn't recommended.

The Audi Q5 outsold the Land Rover Range Rover by over four to one during the 2018 model year.
