Safety

The Q5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Audi Q5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Discovery Sport doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Q5 has standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Q5 and the Discovery Sport have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Q5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 139 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Discovery Sport has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The Q5’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Discovery Sport’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 75 percent more Audi dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Q5’s warranty.

Reliability

The Audi Q5’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Discovery Sport’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Q5’s reliability 62 points higher than the Discovery Sport.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 25th in initial quality. With 55 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 31st.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 63 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 30th.

Engine

The Q5’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 11 more horsepower (248 vs. 237) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (273 vs. 251) than the Discovery Sport’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

As tested in Motor Trend the Audi Q5 is faster than the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Q5 Auto gets better fuel mileage than the Discovery Sport with its standard engine (22 city/27 hwy vs. 21 city/25 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Audi Q5 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The Discovery Sport requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The Q5 offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Q5’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Q5’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Discovery Sport:

Q5

Discovery Sport

Front Rotors

13.3 inches

12.8 inches

Rear Rotors

13 inches

11.8 inches

The Q5’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Discovery Sport are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Q5’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Discovery Sport (255/45R20 vs. 245/45R20).

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Q5’s wheelbase is 3.1 inches longer than on the Discovery Sport (111 inches vs. 107.9 inches).

Chassis

The Q5 is 7 inches narrower than the Discovery Sport, making the Q5 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The design of the Audi Q5 amounts to more than styling. The Q5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is significantly lower than the Discovery Sport (.36) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q5 get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The Q5 has 1.6 inches more front headroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, .6 inches more rear headroom and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Discovery Sport.

Cargo Capacity

The Q5 has a much larger cargo volume than the Discovery Sport with its rear seat up (25.1 vs. 6.8 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Q5. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Q5 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Discovery Sport. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Land Rover. J.D. Power ranks Audi third in service department satisfaction. With a 59% lower rating, Land Rover is ranked 23rd.

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Q5 has standard extendable sun visors. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Audi Q5, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The Audi Q5 outsold the Land Rover Discovery Sport by almost six to one during the 2018 model year.
