Safety

The Allroad has standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Allroad’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

To help make backing safer, the Allroad’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Allroad and the GLC Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Allroad the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 139 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The GLC Coupe has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The Allroad’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the GLC Coupe’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Reliability

The Audi Allroad’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the GLC Coupe’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Allroad’s reliability 26 points higher than the GLC Coupe.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mercedes is ranked 15th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi 10 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

Engine

The Allroad’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 7 more horsepower (248 vs. 241) than the GLC 300 Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Audi Allroad uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The GLC Coupe requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The Allroad offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Allroad’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer launch control.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Allroad has larger tires than the GLC Coupe (245/45R18 vs. 235/55R19).

The Allroad’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GLC Coupe’s standard 55 series tires.

The Allroad has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the GLC Coupe; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Allroad Premium Plus handles at .81 G’s, while the GLC 300 Coupe pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Allroad Premium Plus executes Motor Trend’s “Figure-Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the GLC 300 Coupe (26.3 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .63 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Allroad’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the GLC 300 Coupe’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

Chassis

The Audi Allroad may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Mercedes GLC Coupe.

The design of the Audi Allroad amounts to more than styling. The Allroad has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is significantly lower than the GLC Coupe (.369) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Allroad get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The Allroad has .2 inches more front headroom and .5 inches more front legroom than the GLC Coupe.

Cargo Capacity

The Allroad has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GLC Coupe with its rear seat up (24.2 vs. 17.6 cubic feet). The Allroad has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GLC Coupe with its rear seat folded (58.5 vs. 49.4 cubic feet).

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Mercedes. J.D. Power ranks Audi third in service department satisfaction. With a 3% lower rating, Mercedes is ranked 6th.

Ergonomics

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Allroad has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The GLC Coupe doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Allroad owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Allroad will cost $410 less than the GLC Coupe over a five-year period.

The Allroad will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Allroad will retain 50.32% to 50.79% of its original price after five years, while the GLC Coupe only retains 45.7% to 47.57%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Audi Allroad will be $3510 to $11486 less than for the Mercedes GLC Coupe.
