Safety

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the A7. But it costs extra on the XC60.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the A7 Prestige helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The XC60 doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the A7 and the XC60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 25th in initial quality. With 17 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 29th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 22nd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi 22 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

Engine

The A7’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 85 more horsepower (335 vs. 250) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 258) than the XC60 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The A7’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 19 more horsepower (335 vs. 316) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 295) than the XC60 T6’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Audi A7 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The XC60 T5 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The A7 offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The XC60 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

For better stopping power the A7’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the XC60:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the A7 has larger standard tires than the XC60 (245/45R19 vs. 235/60R18).

The A7’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC60’s standard 60 series tires. The A7 Prestige’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the XC60’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the A7 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the XC60.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the A7’s wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer than on the XC60 (115.2 inches vs. 112.8 inches).

For better maneuverability, the A7’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the XC60’s (36.4 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

Chassis

The A7 is 9.3 inches shorter in height than the XC60, making the A7 much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The design of the Audi A7 amounts to more than styling. The A7 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .28 Cd. That is significantly lower than the XC60 (.32) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the A7 get better fuel mileage.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the A7 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC60. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Audi third in service department satisfaction. With a 29% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 14th.

Ergonomics

The A7’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The A7’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XC60’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the A7 has standard extendable sun visors. The XC60 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the A7 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XC60 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.
