For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar E-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Stelvio and the E-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.


The engine in the Stelvio has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the E-Pace have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

The E-Pace’s redline is at 6500 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The Stelvio has a 5500 RPM redline.


The Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 34 more horsepower (280 vs. 246) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (306 vs. 269) than the E-Pace P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (306 vs. 295) than the E-Pace P300 R-Dynamic’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The E-Pace requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Stelvio has larger standard tires than the E-Pace (235/60R18 vs. 225/65R17). The Stelvio’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the E-Pace (255/45R20 vs. 245/45R20).

The Stelvio’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the E-Pace’s standard 65 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Stelvio has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the E-Pace.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Stelvio’s wheelbase is 5.4 inches longer than on the E-Pace (111 inches vs. 105.6 inches).

The Stelvio’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the E-Pace’s (58.7% to 41.3%). This gives the Stelvio more stable handling and braking.

The Stelvio AWD handles at .84 G’s, while the E-Pace SE pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Stelvio Ti AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the E-Pace SE (26.9 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Stelvio’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the E-Pace’s (38.5 feet vs. 39.1 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Stelvio has a greater minimum ground clearance than the E-Pace (8.1 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Stelvio to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The Stelvio has 1 inch more front headroom, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the E-Pace.

Cargo Capacity

The Stelvio has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the E-Pace with its rear seat folded (56.5 vs. 52.7 cubic feet).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Stelvio is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the E-Pace. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.


Consumer Reports rated the Stelvio’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the E-Pace’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Stelvio offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The E-Pace doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Stelvio has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The E-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Stelvio has standard extendable sun visors. The E-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Stelvio offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Stelvio is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.


The Alfa Romeo Stelvio outsold the Jaguar E-Pace by almost three to one during 2018.
