Safety

Both the 4C and the M4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Reliability

The M4’s redline is at 7600 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The 4C has a 6500 RPM redline.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the 4C gets better fuel mileage than the M4:

The 4C has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The M4 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

The Alfa Romeo 4C comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the M4.

Brakes and Stopping

The 4C stops much shorter than the M4:

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 4C is 2.3 inches wider in the front than on the M4.

Chassis

The Alfa Romeo 4C may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1150 to 1700 pounds less than the BMW M4.

The 4C is 2 feet, 3.5 inches shorter than the M4, making the 4C easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 4C is 7.7 inches shorter in height than the M4, making the 4C much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the 4C owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the 4C will cost $3215 to $3745 less than the M4 over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Alfa Romeo 4C will be $483 to $8003 less than for the BMW M4.

Recommendations

The 4C was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2015. The M3/M4 hasn’t been picked since 2014.
