Safety

Both the 4C and the 718 Boxster have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Reliability

The 718 Boxster’s redline is at 7500 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The 4C has a 6500 RPM redline.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the 4C has a standard 500-amp battery. The 718 Boxster’s 450-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the 4C gets better fuel mileage than the 718 Boxster Auto (24 city/34 hwy vs. 22 city/29 hwy). The 4C gets better fuel mileage than the 718 Boxster S Auto (24 city/34 hwy vs. 21 city/28 hwy).

The 4C has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 718 Boxster doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

The Alfa Romeo 4C comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the 718 Boxster.

Brakes and Stopping

The 4C stops much shorter than the 718 Boxster:

Tires and Wheels

The 4C’s standard 235/40R18 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 718 Boxster’s standard 45 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 4C is 4.7 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 718 Boxster.

Chassis

The Alfa Romeo 4C may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 650 pounds less than the Porsche 718 Boxster.

The 4C is 1 foot, 3.4 inches shorter than the 718 Boxster, making the 4C easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Ergonomics

The 4C’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The 718 Boxster’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Recommendations

The 4C was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2015. The 718 Boxster hasn’t been picked since 2014.
