Safety

The XT5 Premium/Platinum’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The X4 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front and rear (child comfort guides) seat shoulder belts of the Cadillac XT5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X4 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XT5 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The X4 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XT5 offers optional Reverse Automatic Braking which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The X4 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the XT5 and the X4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the XT5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 120 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The X4 has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the XT5 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW covers the X4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the X4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Cadillac pays for scheduled maintenance on the XT5 for 1 year and 14,000 miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the X4 (4/50,000 vs. 3/36,000).

There are almost 3 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XT5’s warranty.

Engine

The XT5’s 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 70 more horsepower (310 vs. 240) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (271 vs. 260) than the X4 xDrive28i’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the XT5’s fuel efficiency. The X4 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Cadillac XT5 uses regular unleaded gasoline. The X4 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The XT5 FWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the X4 (19.4 vs. 17.7 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The XT5 AWD’s standard fuel tank has 4 gallons more fuel capacity than the X4 (21.7 vs. 17.7 gallons).

The XT5 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The X4 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Cadillac XT5 higher (5 out of 10) than the BMW X4 (3). This means the XT5 produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the X4 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the XT5’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the X4:

Tires and Wheels

The Cadillac XT5’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The BMW X4 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XT5’s wheelbase is 1.9 inches longer than on the X4 (112.5 inches vs. 110.6 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XT5 is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the average track on the X4.

Passenger Space

The XT5 has .8 inches more front legroom, 1.1 inches more front shoulder room, 4.7 inches more rear legroom and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the X4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the XT5’s rear seats recline. The X4’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The XT5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat up than the X4 with its rear seat up (30 vs. 17.7 cubic feet). The XT5 has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat folded than the X4 with its rear seat folded (63 vs. 49.4 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the XT5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The X4 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Ergonomics

The XT5 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The XT5’s optional easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The X4 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The XT5’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The X4 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XT5 has a standard rear wiper. The X4 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XT5 has standard extendable sun visors. The X4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the XT5 keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The X4 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The XT5 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the X4.

Model Availability

The XT5 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The X4 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Cadillac XT5 outsold the BMW X4 by almost 8 to one during 2016.
